Writing

Our Intent

At St Botolph’s, we want every child to be a successful writer. We start in Foundation stage with a handwriting scheme which allows the children to learn to form their letters correctly. This is then followed throughout the school with an aim of all children using a cursive font from an early age. In our teaching of SPaG skills, we aim for children to be able to use the key non-negotiable skills within their writing. Our aim is to have exciting writing opportunities to engage the children from a range of stimulus’ whilst teaching a range of genres.

Our Intent

At St Botolph’s, we strive to ensure that all of our children, regardless of their starting point, have the ability to communicate their thoughts and ideas effectively and efficiently. Handwriting is a skill which must be learned in order for children to produce a style that is legible and comfortable. With our high expectations in mind, we aim that all of the children take pride in the presentation of their work and within this policy, we have aims and strategies to develop confidence, accuracy and fluency in handwriting.

The Teaching of Handwriting

At St Botolph’s, we have adapted the cursive style of handwriting in which children are taught to write letters joined together in a flowing manner, for the purpose of making writing faster and more fluent. We are very proud of our pupil’s handwriting and take particular care in our handwriting style. We use Letter-join’s on-line handwriting resource as the basis of our handwriting policy as it covers all the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Planning our Writing Lessons

We follow a range of phases in our writing to help us develop our skills. These phases include a SPaG phase, a writing phase and an editing and improving phase. All of our phases start with a book and builds up to a piece of writing based on what we have been reading.
