Physical Education

Welcome to PE at St Botolph’s!

Our Vision and Intent

At St Botolph’s Church of England Primary School, we believe that Physical Education plays an important role in helping children lead healthy, active and happy lives. Our aim is to provide an enjoyable and inclusive PE curriculum from Reception through to Year 6, giving every child the opportunity to develop their skills, confidence and love of being physically active.

We offer a wide range of sports, games and physical activities that help pupils improve their fitness, wellbeing and overall health. Through high-quality PE lessons, children are encouraged to challenge themselves, achieve their personal best and experience success, whether participating individually, as part of a team or in competitive sport.

Our curriculum helps pupils to develop physical confidence, resilience and determination while promoting important values such as perseverance, respect, teamwork and sportsmanship. We want every child to leave St Botolph’s with the knowledge, skills and motivation to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

In line with the National Curriculum, our PE curriculum enables pupils to:

  • Develop competence across a broad range of physical activities.
  • Be physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • Participate in competitive sports and activities.
  • Understand the importance of healthy, active lifestyles.

As with all areas of learning at St Botolph’s, our PE curriculum builds on children’s prior experiences and provides opportunities for first-hand learning. Through engaging and exciting activities, pupils develop resilience, creativity, critical thinking and strong interpersonal skills, preparing them well for their future learning and life beyond primary school.

Enrichment opportunities

Here at St Botolph’s our children have the opportunity to take part in both school and local competitions such as cross-country, football and multi-skills events. We also love to promote new activities to all children. Over the past year, our children participated in various enrichment days such as fencing, tri-golf and glow in the dark dodgeball. We love to provide children with new opportunities and enrichment and give them new experiences. This was a whole school event and the children loved it!

Celebrating Success

We love to celebrate all sporting achievements, whether that is an event inside or outside of school. Children are encouraged to bring their trophies or certificates into school for a photo where it will appear on our sports display for everyone to see.

Learning at home

Working in partnership with parents is an important part of promoting a lifelong love of physical activity. We encourage families to support their child’s physical development by providing regular opportunities to be active at home and within the local community. Activities such as family walks, bike rides, trips to the park, swimming, dancing, skipping, trampolining and playing football can help children develop their fitness, coordination and confidence. Simple games at home, including throwing and catching challenges, obstacle courses, hula hoop activities, yoga sessions, target games and relay races, can further develop key physical skills in a fun and engaging way. Parents can also encourage active lifestyles by celebrating effort and achievement and participating alongside their children whenever possible.
