Welcome to Year Five!
Hello and a warm welcome to Year 5’s class page. Year 5 is an exciting and rewarding year, full of new learning, growing independence and plenty of opportunities to shine. Across the curriculum, children will deepen their knowledge and skills in English through rich class texts, extended writing and a strong focus on vocabulary and reading fluency. In Maths, they will tackle new challenges including fractions, decimals, percentages, formal written methods and problem‑solving. Our science learning will explore forces, Earth and space, materials and living things, with plenty of hands‑on investigation. Throughout the year, pupils will also take part in engaging units in Geography, Art, DT, Computing, PSHE, RE and Music, as well as developing confidence and teamwork through weekly PE sessions. It promises to be a memorable year of learning, discovery and new challenges for all our pupils.
History is a real highlight this year. Children will study the Anglo‑Saxons and Vikings, supported by exciting visits to the Jorvik Centre. There are also amazing opportunities for the children to engage in workshops at the Lincolnshire Showground. Additionally, the children have the exciting experience of meeting the Red Arrows.

Book we will be reading

Journey by Aaron Becker – is a captivating wordless book that empowers children to develop visual literacy, enhances critical thinking, and inspires boundless creative writing as they learn to interpret and narrate the story through illustrations alone.

Brightstorm by Vashti Hardy – is an engaging, age-appropriate book to stimulate reading for year 5. It has been nominated for a range of awards and is picked for this part in the year to really kick start that love of reading in year 5.

Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz –recommended reading age of 9 and above. The text allows for the reader to be engaged in an action and suspense novel, relevant for their age group. The text has been chosen in line with the narrative topic as it is a brilliant text for developing character knowledge, suspense and action.

Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo – The book relates to the topic of myths and legends and supports the previous learning of action and suspense from a previous year 5 topic.

Grimms tales by Phillip Pullman – retellings give Year 5 pupils rich, traditional stories told with clear, powerful language that strengthens their understanding of narrative structure and classic fairy‑tale themes. The book also offers excellent opportunities for exploring character, morality and storytelling techniques in an accessible, engaging way.

Rescue by David Long – a non – fiction book. It has a reading age of 9-11 years. This book has lots of short stories in it which gives the children an opportunity to look at different stories after reading a longer book in the previous term.

Holes by Louis Sachar – A high-quality text aimed at upper KS2. This book will challenge the reading ability of the year 5 children and is a good transition to year 6 book.

Cloud Tea Monkeys by Mal Peet – is a powerful picture book aimed at older children. The book has a mature theme suitable for year 5 children. It has lovely illustrations and fits with the monkeys theme in year 5.

The Listeners by Walter de la Mare – This poem is a commonly studied poem for year 5. Children will have the opportunity to study a classic and narrative poem. There are key themes of love, the loss of love and death with evocative language to really get the children thinking.
