Our Vision and Ethos

Our Forest School vision is to provide a specialised learning approach that offers children regular learner-led exploration and discovery, nurturing meaningful experiences through hands-on learning in a natural environment with trees. Our Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all involved. We will give children the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves while supporting and fostering:

  • Development of self- confidence, resilience and independence
  • Improved mental health and emotional health
  • Exposure to manageable risk
  • Communication skills
  • Self esteem
  • How to care for others and the environment
  • A sense of calmness, relaxation and heightened sense of wellbeing

All children will be included with all activities and no form of discrimination will take place. Reasonable adjustments will be made to make it inclusive for all. Inclusion is a thread which runs through all of the Forest School activities regardless of a child’s ability, disability, gender, race, culture, etc.

Forest School aims to provide a welcome and appropriate learning opportunity for all children providing an environment in which all children are supported to reach their full potential.

Our Garden

We have recently had a renovation of our garden, with thanks to Equans, who provided funds and labour. We have transformed our garden into a useable, versatile and safe space in which we can carry out Forest School sessions to children across the whole school.

Term 1 – Year 1

What an exciting start to our new Forest School journey! Year 1 have spent some wonderful Wednesdays exploring the garden and discovering all the exciting things that are on offer in Forest School. The children have done a brilliant job of remembering the safety rules – how to safely enter and move around the fire pit and how to walk around with sticks…we have had lots of fun chanting STICKS STAY DOWN!

The mud pit has been a big hit, with worm hunts and cement factory building taking place. We’ve also seen some delicious looking creations in the mud kitchen…though the worms might enjoy eating them more than the grown ups who were asked to taste it! The weather has mostly been kind to us this term, though we have experienced some rain but that just added to the muddy fun, with mud angels and puddle splashing. The children have decorated the garden by creating mobiles with hand drills and conkers. This is a great opportunity for the children to develop safe tool usage and creativity skills, as well as perseverance when tying knots in the string.

After half term, we look forward to welcoming our Foundation Stage children into the garden on a Wednesday and having lots more adventures, which we will share with you here.

Learning at Home

Getting outside and spending time in nature is a great way of building relationships and creating magical memories with your children. There are so many wonderful habitats you can explore right on our doorstep. Go into a woodland or forest and explore the trees, the wildlife and all nature has to offer.

Below are a selection of identification sheets to help you identify the trees and minibeast you may find on your woodland adventures.
