Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

Year 6 is an exciting and memorable year, full of new challenges, opportunities and achievements. Throughout the year, the children will build on everything they have learned during their time at primary school, growing in confidence and independence as they prepare for the next stage of their journey. Alongside lots of exciting learning, there will be plenty of special moments to enjoy together, from trips and new experiences to SATs, celebrations and all of our important ‘St Botolph’s Year 6 traditions’. We want every child to feel happy, supported and proud of what they achieve, and we look forward to working together to make their final year at St Botolph’s a really positive and memorable one.

Year 6 Curriculum Overview

Below, you will find a short overview of the exciting learning taking place in Year 6 each term. To keep you up to date with what we have been learning in class, we will also share a weekly update on ClassDojo every Friday, celebrating some of the learning and experiences from our week. Autumn 1

We have a busy and exciting first term ahead in Year 6! In Maths, we will begin by developing our understanding of place value before moving on to multiplication and division. In English, we will use The Boy at the Back of the Class to inspire our diary writing, before exploring biographies through I Am Not a Label.

Across the wider curriculum, we will learn about the United Kingdom in Geography, including its major cities and counties, while in History we will begin our study of World War Two, exploring how the war began and learning about the Allied and Axis powers. In Art, we will discover the work of Claude Monet and use his artwork as inspiration to create two paintings of our own. Our DT project will see us investigating and designing different types of bread, ready to bring our designs to life next term.

In Computing, we will explore how information travels across the internet and consider the use of images online, while our French lessons will revisit key vocabulary before moving on to telling the time. In Music, we will be exploring Happy by Pharrell Williams, and our PE sessions will focus on Tag Rugby and Orienteering.

We also attended a Construction Day trip to the Lincolnshire Showground in September which was a fantastic opportunity to experience the world of construction and discover some of the different careers within the industry.

Weekly Information

PE

PE in Year 6 will take place every Thursday afternoon. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday, there is no need to send any normal uniform. Please ensure your child has PE kit suitable for outdoor and indoor PE.

Reading Books

In Year 6, we encourage children to be responsible for changing and choosing their own reading books from our scheme, school and class libraries. The children will have an opportunity to do this each day as and when they require it. We ask that the children read at home a minimum of 3 x per week and that this is recorded in their diary. Teachers will check reading diaries regularly.

Homework

Homework in Year 6 will always be handed out on a Friday and is due in the following Thursday. Homework will mostly be:

1. CGP Homework Books – The children will bring home a Maths/English workbook on alternating weeks. They will be given some pages to complete which should take the children approximately 20 minutes. The children will record in their Reading Diary which pages should be completed. They will need to bring this book back into school on a Thursday morning for us to mark and swap over the books ready for the following week.

2. Times Tables Rockstars – We will set the children a 20-minute session each week. We cannot stress enough the importance of knowing their tables to support them in their Maths lessons for Year 6. Little and often is the best way!

3. Regular Reading

4. Spelling – The children will be tested on a range of spellings and spellings rules throughout the year.

Spelling Mat

What Children Will Need:

Reading book and reading record (in school everyday)

An appropriate water bottle

Uniform Reminders – please refer to the school uniform policy on the website for reminders.

How parents can help at home:

Please support your children with their home learning.

Your support makes such a difference to your child’s learning and confidence in Year 6. Please encourage regular reading at least three times a week, practise times tables and support your child in completing their home learning activities. Talking about what they have learnt in school, encouraging independence and celebrating their efforts will also help them develop the confidence, resilience and positive learning habits they need as they prepare for secondary school.
