Hello and welcome to Year 4’s class page. Below you will find some information that you may find useful. We will do our very best to update it as regularly as possible and here you will find useful websites links, top tips and most importantly, dates for your diary!
Over the course of this year, the children will have the opportunity to go on school trips to Harry Potter Studios, Newark Palace Theatre and they will attend swimming sessions in the summer term.

Books We Will Read
Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar
The book sideways stories has been chosen for the start of year 4 as a longer text to engage the children. It is a series of short stories and is a really enjoyable book.
Demon Headmaster by Gillian Cross
This book has been chosen in line with our topic ‘School, but not as we know it.’ It is a year 4 suggested, high-quality text which engages the children and can be used as our class read.
Aladdin and The Enchanted Lamp- Phillip Pullman
Aladdin has been chosen as the year 4 traditional tales topic which supports the build up of the traditional tales throughout the school. It is an alternative version of Aladdin which builds on the alternative versions in year 3.
George and the Dragon- Chris Wormell
This book has been chosen in line with the traditional tales topic for year 4. This book is aimed at years ¾ and is from the reading scheme that we use in school. It is age appropriate and may be a traditional tale that the children are not familiar with.
Migration by Mike Unwin
This book has been chosen as it is a book aimed at children aged 7 and above.
The book is a non-fiction book that describes the migration of different animals and fits well with the genre of explanation texts to describe what migration looks like.
Little Book Big Dreams Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela is a Little People Big Dreams book. The children at St Botolph’s love these books so it was chosen with the children in mind. The book follows the story of Nelson Mandela and links to our work on biographies. This book is used alongside a more difficult biography example on his life.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory- Roald Dahl
The book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been chosen because it is a high quality text which links nicely to our Mayan topic later in the year. The book is by a well known author and it on lots of recommended reading lists.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone- JK Rowling
Harry Potter has been chosen as it is a classic children’s book that is loved by lots of children. It is an age appropriate, high-quality text that is aspirational for our year 4 children.
Weekly Information
PE Day- Friday PM. Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. kit in school including shoes and a jacket. These sessions will be run by Elite Sports.
Reading Diaries- Reading diaries should be in school every day. Please ensure that you or your child sign the reading diary every time that it is read. This should be a minimum of three times per week.
Book Changing- There are two reading schemes in school. Read, Write Inc ‘Book Bag Books’ will be changed on a Friday. Big Cat books will be changed once the child has finished it.
Spellings- Spellings will be handed out every Friday. Children will be given 6 weekly words and 2 from our Year 3/4 expectations. These will then be tested on the following Friday.
Homework – Times table homework will be sent home on a Friday to be returned on the following Friday.

Home Learning
Reading- At least three times a week. Signed by an adult or child.
Times Tables Rockstars- 20 minutes over the course of the week in the garage section. Bespoke calculations will be set for each child.
Spellings- Children will be given eight spellings on a Friday and tested the following Friday.
Times tables- These will be sent home on a Friday and will be due in on the following Friday. This will support us in preparation for the Year 4 Multiplication check.
How parents can help at home
Please support your children with their home learning. If you would ever like more learning to do with your children at home, please get in touch and we can find some other tasks for you to engage with your children at home to help support their learning at school.
