Welcome to Year 3
A warm welcome from the teaching team in Year 3. Year 3 is a fantastic year full of lots of exciting learning across the curriculum. We will always do our best to make learning interesting and relevant for the children in order to make it as applicable to their everyday life as possible, inside and outside the St Botolph’s community.
Meet The Team
Class Teachers – Mrs Eames (3A) & Miss Barnes (3B)
Teaching Assistants & 1:1’s – Mrs Sanderson (TA shared across both classes), Mrs Richardson (1:1 in 3A) & Mrs Beckett (1:1 in 3A).
Midday Supervisor – Miss Croft
Elite Sport Coach – The children will be taught by an Elite Sports Coach in their weekly PE slot.
What We’ll Learn
Term One and Two
Maths: Numbers to 1000, Addition and Subtraction (this includes 3-digit numbers and renaming).
English: The books we focus on in Term One are ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ and ‘Flanimals’. We will also do some Autumn poetry if we have time for it in Term One. Our end goal in our ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ unit of work is to write a five-part story (opening, build-up, dilemma, resolution, ending) and our end goal for our work on ‘Flanimals’ is a character description. The books we focus on in Term 2 are Ug and The Secrets of Stonehenge.

Maths: Time, pictograms and bar graphs, fractions, angles, lines and shapes and perimeter of figures
English: We begin the Summer Term with a visual literacy cycle of work focussing on a short clip called ‘A Cloudy Lesson’ and then we carry on the term using a clip from Wallace & Gromit about a robot called The Autochef as a hook for the next cycle of work. In Summer 2 we then focus our work on Charlotte’s Web.

Books We Will Read
In Term One and Two Miss Barnes’ class & Mrs Eames’ will start by reading The Wild Robot as our class reading book, written by Peter Brown. We have chosen this book because of the rich vocabular choices made by Peter Brown, the opportunity for the children to connect with the main character Roz, as well as all of the excellent themes for discussion including friendship, family, belonging, kindness, compassion and perseverance (two of our Christian Values) as well as caring for the environment.
Weekly Information
PE day – Tuesday
Reading book day(s) – The children can choose to change their books when they would like to, within reason, once they are on the RWI spelling programme. Please feel free to read books from home as well as their school reading book, Sleaford Library has some fabulous books to choose from.
Homework expectations – Reading three times per week, TTRS for at least 15 minutes per week, regular spelling practice. (More information listed below in the ‘Home Learning’ section)
Spellings – The children will be tested on a list of eight spellings every fortnight on a Friday (once they are on the RWI spelling programme). They will focus on the spelling rule we have been learning as well as two common exception words, we expect the children to also practice these spellings at home.
Home Learning
Reading expectations – We expect the children to read at least three times per week and this must be recorded in their reading records. We will check the children’s reading record every Tuesday and Friday.
Times Tables Rock Stars – We expect the children to spend around 15 minutes per week on TTRS, however best suits you. If you would prefer an alternative times table related task to reduce screen time, please get in contact via Dojo and we can send home something else.

How parents can help at home – Please support your children with their home learning. If you would ever like more learning to do with your children at home, please get in touch and we can find some other tasks for you to engage with your children at home to help support their learning at school.
